No flood, no matter how deep, can overcome the resilience of people—or their goodness of heart.
In Pamplona 3, Las Piñas, Angelica Cosme saw 19-year-old Rogelito help an old lady trying to make it through the strong rain and waist-deep flood. He went to her aid, picking her up and carrying her across the street.
On España in Manila on Monday evening, Christian Sison saw a street child helping people in the flood, without charging them for his assistance
In Sorrento, Bacoor, Cavite, Benjie Mesa saw a man walking back and forth a bridge in the rain. It turned out that he was industriously clearing the bridge of debris so that people could pass.
And according to Youscooper Ronald Tan, residents of San Antonio Valley 15 in Sucat, Parañaque rallied together to save a 6-month-old baby and two elderly people who had been trapped in a house by chest-deep water.
In Meycauayan, Bulacan, a group of friends created what they called a "Pinoy amphibian" vehicle, made out of a motorcycle and a fiberglass body, which they are using to help out their neighbors at no charge.
"Medyo mabilis siyang makapunta dun sa mga pwedeng mangailangan," said one of the vehicle's developers. The friends plan to refine the boat's design and improvise some solar panels for it.
In other instances of Pinoy ingenuity, people attached monobloc chairs and benches to their pedicabs to raise their passengers above the water, while others who found their beds submerged were able to make do by sleeping in closets, according to a separate report by Alegre on "Saksi."
And through it all, Filipinos displayed the good cheer they've become known for, from making macros about the monsoon to having fun in the floods. Many people took the opportunity to go swimming, despite the Department of Health's warnings about the risk of leptospirosis. From basketball courts to underpasses, it seems like every place that was flooded became a swimming pool for fun-loving children—and at least one mermaid, "Rita," found relaxing in the flooded street complete with bikini top and gold fish tail.
Only in the Philippines.
